1965 Buick Skylark
The 1965 Buick Skylark was just one of the many models of the Skylark badge to be produced by Buick from 1953 to 1998. The long run of this successful model can be attributed to the fact that it changed with the times. Over the years, the Skylark went from convertible to compact to mid-sized back to compact, and finally grew again in size. As tastes and technology changed, so did the Skylark.
The third generation, which ran from 1964 to 1972 included the 1965 Buick Skylark and represented a growth period for the model. It grew from a compact to an intermediate-sized car, and along with that grew the engine under the hood. The 1965 Buick Skylark was nearly a foot longer than in the previous generation. The engine options provided buyers with more speed and power and included the 225-cubic inch Fireball V6 with 155 horsepower and the 210-horsepower, 300-cubic inch V8.
If that kind of power proved inadequate, the 1965 Buick Skylark also came with a Gran Sport option. This performance package targeted young people who were loving new muscle cars like the Pontiac GTO. It came with a huge Nail Head 401-cubic inch V8 with a power rating of 325. The engine came out of the larger Buick Wildcat and the combination of the bigger engine in the smaller car made for potent performance. Also included with the Gran Sport package was a stronger and stiffer suspension, dual exhaust, and the choice of a four- or three-speed manual transmission or a two-speed Super Turbine.
Today, collectors love the 1965 Buick Skylark, especially the GS models. They have iconic 1960s style, powerful engines, and performance-engineering, along with sturdy and reliable Buick construction. Whether it is the two-door convertible, hardtop, or coupe, a 1965 Buick Skylar Gran Sport is a highly desirable and collectible car.
